Fourth Archbishop of Hartford
Archbishop Henry J. Mansell was installed as the fourth Archbishop of Hartford on December 18, 2003. His tenure has been marked by strong leadership and extrordinary committment to the people he serves.
As Chairman of the Saint Mary’s Health System, Archbishop Mansell has demonstrated a deep and nuanced understanding of healthcare. Aided by his vision, leadership and support, Saint Mary’s has experienced unprecedented growth. Since assuming his role as Chair, Saint Mary’s has posted four consecutive years of positive financial performance, expanded services and access, increased admissions, invested in new technologies and enhanced patient service. During this same time, Saint Mary’s has established its clinical quality to be among the best hospitals not only in Connecticut, but indeed in the entire United States.
Archbishop Mansell’s accomplishments in healthcare are not limited to Saint Mary’s Hospital. He also serves as the chair of St. Francis Hospital. On January 1, 2006, the Priest Wellness Program was initiated through Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hartford; Saint Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury; and the Hospital of Saint Raphael, New Haven.
Through the Archbishop's Annual Appeal, with the Order of Malta of Hartford County, and St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Archbishop Mansell helped initiate the Malta House of Care mobile clinic. This free medical service to the uninsured is available regardless of race, religion or nationality. The mobile clinic rotates among the Catholic parishes in inner city Hartford. On August 23, 2010, another Malta House of Care mobile clinic was blessed and dedicated, and rotates among Catholic parishes in inner city Waterbury.
Archbishop Mansell’s business acumen has resulted in many other accomplishments including the establishment of offices for Human Resources, Development, Communications and Facilities and Construction Management for the Archdiocese of Hartford. In June of 2008, the new Institute for the Hispanic Family was dedicated in Hartford and in August of the same year a new Catholic Charities Agency was dedicated.. On August 7, 2009, Cathedral Green, an affordable and supportive housing development, opened its doors in the converted St. Joseph Cathedral School in Hartford.
Since coming to the Archdiocese, Archbishop Mansell has overseen six consecutive Archbishop's Annual Appeals, every one exceeding an ever higher goal. He initiated a tuition assistance component to the Appeal for Catholic elementary school students along with an emergency assistance component to provide funding for medical and dental care, food, clothing, rental assistance, utilities, and auto repairs, to those parishioners who face economic hard times.
Among his many honors, Archbishop Mansell has earned honorary doctorate degrees from Niagara University, St Bonaventure University, Canisius College, Albertus Magnus College, Goodwin College, and the University of Hartford. On June 29, 2004, Archbishop Mansell received the pallium from His Holiness Pope John Paul II in Rome.
It is with deep gratitude that Saint Mary’s Hospital recognizes
Archbishop Henry J. Mansell as our 2011 Champion.
