CHAMPION DINNER 2011 Co-Chairmen James C. Smith & Paul F. Kelly, MD Archbishop Mansell Honored As 2011 Saint Mary’s Hospital Champion

Nearly 550 friends and supporters of Saint Mary’s Hospital attended the Champion Dinner on September 12 at the Villa Rosa in Waterbury to honor the 2011 Saint Mary’s Hospital Champion, the Most Reverend Henry J. Mansell, D.D., Archbishop of Hartford.

The Champion Award is presented annually to an individual or institution with a history of outstanding service to the hospital and the community. The award was presented this year to Archbishop Mansell in recognition of his commitment to healthcare, and his exceptional leadership and commitment to Saint Mary’s Hospital.

“There is no finer champion than Archbishop Mansell,” said Chad Wable, President and Chief Executive Officer of Saint Mary’s Health System. “The one constant in all of our success at Saint Mary's Health System has been the leadership of Archbishop Mansell as the Chairman of our Boards of Directors. We appreciate all that he has done, is doing and will do to ensure a vibrant healthcare delivery system and a strong Catholic healthcare ministry at Saint Mary's and for the city of Waterbury for many years to come.”

The Champion Dinner included two video tributes and a performance by the Northwest Catholic High School Choir. The highlight of the evening was the surprise presentation of a check to the Archbishop in the amount of $50,000 to be donated to the charities of his choice.

“I normally like to present awards. I don’t normally receive awards. This is a revolution for me,” the Archbishop said. In accepting the award, he commented that from when he first arrived in Hartford in 2003, he noticed the tremendous affection that people had, and still have, for Saint Mary’s Hospital.

Archbishop also spoke about his “great love for Saint Mary’s Hospital and Health System and all the people who make the miracle happen as they have for 100 years.”

“We look to the people who make the difference,” the Archbishop said. “We see momentum going forward.”
