Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women, except for skin cancer, yet only 60 percent of “insured” women and just over 40% of “uninsured” women have annual mammograms. Saint Mary’s Hospital, in alliance with area physicians, provides a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options for women’s breast health. Starting at mammography, ultrasound and MRI, to minimally invasive biopsies, to surgery, coordinated cancer care treatment, follow-up care and long-term surveillance, the hospital and physicians are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for all women, regardless of their ability to pay.
Free breast cancer screenings are offered at the Family Health Center for women age 40 or older who meet any number of different criteria. This program is dependent upon limited funds provided by a grant from the CT Department of Public Health, and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These monies are normally exhausted long before year end. For this reason, a fund was established by Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation in 2006 to supplement this program. Providing screening mammograms for all women is an essential component of proper health care. Studies published just last year have confirmed mammography’s important role in increasing breast cancer survival rates through early detection. These findings underscore the fact that mammography is still the best screening tool available for the majority of women.
In its sixth year, the Dorothy Hamill Women fore Women golf tournament has contributed nearly $100,000 to the Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation Mammography Fund. With these funds, and thanks to the generosity of our event participants, sponsors and donors, Saint Mary’s is able to provide Mammograms to women in the Greater Waterbury area who would otherwise not have access to the procedures. The fund also provides further screenings, including Diagnostic Bilateral Mammograms, Diagnostic Unilateral Mammograms and Screen Breast Ultrasounds to women who need such additional testing. Screenings are offered to patients by physician or clinic referral in the Greater Waterbury Area. We are hopeful that by offering women a chance at early detection, Saint Mary’s Hospital will aid in the fight again breast cancer for women of the Greater Waterbury Community.
You can help to underwrite the cost of a mammogram for a woman who would otherwise be unable to afford this potentially-life saving screening by participating as a “friend” of The Dorothy Hamill Women fore Women Golf Tournament. This annual event will take place on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Country Club of Waterbury. Please consider a donation so that you can help us reach our goal of $75,000.
