From our President and CEO...
Saint Mary’s Hospital marked its 100th anniversary with a year long centennial celebration of “100 years of caring.” Throughout the year, we have had many opportunities to reflect on the healing ministry begun by our founders, the Right Reverend Monsignor William J. Slocum and the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Today, their legacy of caring endures despite significant changes in healthcare over the last century, and we continue to share their commitment to quality patient care, innovation and technology.
During this last year, Saint Mary’s Hospital and Health System was recognized for advances in both operating and clinical performance. Several important quality milestones highlighted the excellent clinical care we provide to patients suffering from heart disease, cancer and stroke, as well as Saint Mary’s expertise in caring for patients who have suffered traumatic injuries.
This year Saint Mary’s was:
• Designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the State Department of Public Health
• Honored as the first and only hospital in Connecticut to receive Gold and Silver Awards for cardiac care from the American Heart Association’s “Get with the Guidelines” program
• Commended for providing “superior trauma care” by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, which re-verified Saint Mary’s Level II Trauma Center
• Distinguished by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, which awarded the Cancer Program at Saint Mary’s Hospital a three-year accreditation with commendations in seven categories.
• Reaccredited by the Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 16,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects our organization’s commitment to meeting performance standards.
Each of these achievements demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the healthcare needs of our community and our longstanding dedication to quality care. We are proud to have served Greater Waterbury for more than 100 years and we appreciate the continued support of our community as we begin our Second Century of Caring.
